WHERE TO GO FOR ADVICE
Wealth, Wisdom, and the Fracture in the American Dream
Advice is easy to give when you’ve already arrived. For individuals in Maryland and DC, this reflection explores Sahil Bloom’s framework for wealth, the emotional tension between aspiration and reality, and the deeper question of who advice is really for.
Have you heard of Sahil Bloom? He has a new book to guide you to a happy, healthy life: “The Five Types of Wealth: A Transformative Guide to Design Your Dream Life.” The title is inviting. Would you like to transform your life and live your dream? Who wouldn’t? What are these five types of wealth?
- Time
- Social
- Mental
- Physical
- Financial
Sahil encourages us to approach them in that order. We can find happiness and bliss if our focus on finance comes last.
This should be a good read for the independent farmer in rural Indiana who can no longer afford his bills.
This should be captivating to the laid-off assembly line worker in Ohio who is struggling with retraining because our cars are made overseas instead of in his hometown.
For the nurse working double shifts, because no one is going into nurse training anymore, this could fill her 5-minute break between shifts.
This should be inspiring to the teacher who is overworked and underpaid and manages a classroom where people tease her and sometimes spit on her.
OK! I am angry.
Sahil Bloom attended Stanford as an undergraduate and led the baseball team to victory after victory. He then received a master’s degree from Stanford and made a baa-zillion dollars. Yes, all of his peers can benefit from this book. He is saying that working in the industry like a madman was hard and draining and that now he wants to enjoy his wealth and position and focus on parts of life that are more meaningful. That is a great idea.
The flaw in his thinking is that this country is moving in two different directions. The gap between the wealthy and the struggling is increasing. That means the middle class is about to fall into the crevasse. Is transformation needed in this country? Sure. Will it come through Sahil’s guidance? I doubt it.
